Diagnostic & Antibiotic Stewardship

This module focuses on the importance of antibiotic stewardship programs in acute care hospitals and promotes engagement from frontline personnel. It provides the learner with the tools and information to optimize the use of antibiotic and infectious diagnostic testing and reviews potential unintended consequences of antibiotic use and inappropriate infectious diagnostic testing and the role of antibiotic stewardship programs.

Antibiotic stewardship interventions focused on:

  • Appropriate antibiotic selection and de-escalation/discontinuation
  • Documenting indication of antibiotics
  • Antibiotic time out
  • Diagnostic Stewardship
  • Appropriate urine cultures
  • Rapid diagnostic testing
  • C.difficile testing

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Utilize infectious diagnostic testing only when indicated
  2. Use antibiotics only when they’re needed and at the appropriate dose, frequency, and duration
