Compendium of Strategies to Prevent HAIs (2022/2023 Updates)

This course consists of a series of presentations covering the following topics:

  • VAP/VAE/NV-HAP: This webinar will explore the challenges of HAP diagnosis, the panel’s framework & criteria for making recommendations, and thorniest issues including oral care with chlorhexidine, subglottic secretion drainage, selective digestive decontamination, and NV-HAP prevention.
  • Implementation Strategies for Prevention & Hand Hygiene: This webinar will focus on the standard approach to implementation, assessing determinants of change, choosing appropriate measures and selecting a framework, as well as a summary of the new hand hygiene content on glove use and prevention and environmental contamination from the 2023 Compendium.  In addition, some of the most difficult hand hygiene issues will be explored to include the role fingernails play in hand hygiene and what measurement strategies are most effective for improvement in hand hygiene compliance.
  • CDI & MRSA: The purpose of this webinar is to update healthcare personnel on the latest science that drives the practice of prevention of C. difficile and MRSA infection in acute care hospitals presented in the recently published SHEA compendia. Essential practices and additional approaches for CDI and MRSA prevention, as well as controversial and unresolved issues will be discussed, particularly those that have been updated since the previous compendia published in 2014.
  • CLABSI & CAUTI: The purpose of this webinar is to review essential practices new to the 2022 Compendium.  Discussion will focus on Additional approaches such as use of antimicrobial impregnated/coated catheters, use of antimicrobial lock solutions for long term vascular access and use of vascular access teams. Some Unresolved issues will also be discussed such as surveillance of infections caused by other vascular catheters such as short-term peripheral catheters and use of antiseptic-containing end caps (so called port protectors).

Target Audience

  • Hospital epidemiologists
  • Infection preventionists
  • Respiratory therapists
  • Critical care nurses
  • Physicians
  • Nurses
  • Advanced practice providers
  • Pharmacists
  • Hospital support staff (e.g., environmental services)
  • Those involved with Infection Control, Public Health, Quality Improvement and Patient Safety looking to collaborate to implement evidence-based practices, in particular for HAI prevention and to improve hand hygiene practices in their organization

Learning Objectives

After participating in this activity, learners will be able to:

VAP/VAE/NV-HAP
  1. Describe how nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, physicians, and infection preventionists can collaborate to prevent VAP/VAE/NV-HAP.
  2. Explain why the compendium recommends against including chlorhexidine in oral care regimens.
  3. Delineate alternative oral care strategies in lieu of chlorhexidine.
  4. Discuss the potential benefits vs risks of selective digestive decontamination.
  5. Summarize the strengths and limitations of subglottic secretion drainage.
  6. Outline strategies to prevent NV-HAP.
Implementation Strategies for Prevention & Hand Hygiene
  1. Develop and incorporate a standard approach to implementing HAI prevention interventions in healthcare institutions.
  2. Demonstrate confidence in supporting HAI prevention within your healthcare team and healthcare setting through effective implementation of Compendium recommendations.
  3. Describe the implementation of appropriate glove use and how to take steps to reduce environmental contamination associated with sinks and sink drains.
  4. Effectively collaborate with the healthcare team on decision-making related to fingernail policies and hand hygiene measurement strategies.
CDI & MRSA
  1. Describe the specific roles that various members of the healthcare team provide for implementation of essential and additional IPC practices for CDI and MRSA prevention.
  2. Discuss implementation barriers for healthcare team providing reasoning behind each challenging recommendation.
CLABSI & CAUTI
  1. Describe the updates to the SHEA CLABSI and CAUTI Compendium.
  2. Apply changes to IPC practices for the healthcare team based on the updates.
  3. Employ implementation strategies for the healthcare team by discussing reasoning behind each challenging recommendation.
  4. Recognize the importance of team building with vascular access staff for a successful program.
