The goal of this webinar is to review updates, discuss example cases, and provide guidance on implementation of the 2025 CDC recommendations for the management of occupational exposures to HIV, including updated post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) regimens, considerations for exposures involving patients with undetectable viral loads, management of individuals on pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), and recommendations for follow-up HIV testing and related laboratory diagnostics.

Target Audience

This program is designed for healthcare professionals directly involved in the evaluation and management of occupational exposures to HIV. Primary participants include occupational health clinicians, infection prevention and control staff, emergency medicine providers, nurse leaders, pharmacists who review and dispense antiretrovirals, and employee health teams responsible for coordinating exposure response, initiating PEP, and guiding follow-up care.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Determine the best management strategy - including selection of antiretroviral drug regimen and duration when this is appropriate – following situations involving potential occupational HIV exposures. PEP.
  2. Implement the appropriate laboratory monitoring tests at the correct intervals.
  3. Collaborate with interprofessional team members to manage challenging HIV exposure scenarios, including cases where the exposed individual was on PrEP or the source patient has an undetectable viral load, using shared decision-making to determine optimal care.
