C&C: H5N1: Navigating Screening, Isolation & Joint Commission Guidelines

January 31, 2025
Grab your favorite beverage, turn on your camera, and join the conversation! Converse & Convene is a virtual networking forum moderated by SHEA member experts who will lead and facilitate discussion and collaboration. Participants will be able to share challenges, lessons learned, and gain greater insight not only with their breakout groups but with a larger group discussion directly following and lead by the moderators.

We will begin with an introduction of the topic before moving into breakout rooms. The conversation will center around the following discussion points within these four themes. Please feel free to bring your own questions, ideas, and stories.

1. What is the optimal way to conduct HCID screening?:
As part of that discussion, breakout groups may touch upon such questions as: is it better to ask about travel first and then symptoms only if travel is positive, or vice versa? What symptoms should be included in the screen (should conjunctivitis be added to existing screening protocols to capture H5N11)? Where should screening be done (upon arrival only, or somehow in advance of appointment)? How and when should animal exposure be incorporated into screening protocols? What references and thresholds should be used to add a country to travel screening? How are we developing and ensuring competencies for screening?

2. What is optimal for Isolation when patients are identified H5N1 by screening protocols?:
As part of that discussion, breakout groups may touch upon such questions as: is it better to ask about travel first and then symptoms only if travel is positive, or vice versa? What symptoms should be included in the screen (should conjunctivitis be added to existing screening protocols to capture H5N11)? Where should screening be done (upon arrival only, or somehow in advance of appointment)? How and when should animal exposure be incorporated into screening protocols? What references and thresholds should be used to add a country to travel screening? How are we developing and ensuring competencies for screening?

3. The January 16th CDC HAN:
What are the barriers to following the new subtyping recommendations?

4. Current climate:
How do we overcome the current communication blackouts and still maximize the “identify/isolate/inform” process in hospitals?
