Hot Topics in MDROs

This course is made up of multiple sessions, covering the following:

  • Antimicrobial Stewardship & MDROs: This webinar will focus on the current data regarding antibiotic use and antibiotic resistance, both within the United States and globally.  Participants will learn how to implement core elements of antimicrobial stewardship to optimize antimicrobial use.
  • Infection Prevention & MDROs: This webinar will focus on the evolving epidemiology of multidrug resistant organisms, including Candida auris and gram-negative organisms. Presenters will discuss multimodal interventions to reduce transmission of MDRO in healthcare settings, including isolation, environmental disinfection and surveillance screening.
  • Resistance & Diagnostic Testing: Multidrug resistant pathogens pose serious challenges to healthcare facilities and delay in appropriate therapy has been associated with worse outcomes. Further, early detection of MDRO could allow for timely implementation of infection prevention measures. In this webinar, speakers will discuss tools and techniques for susceptibility testing and identification of MDROs, as well as methods in communicating test results to relevant stakeholders and the healthcare team.

Target Audience

  • Infection preventionists
  • epidemiologists
  • nurses
  • physicians
  • pharmacists
  • students
  • frontline staff
  • antimicrobial stewards
  • microbiologists

Learning Objectives

After participating in this activity, learners will be able to:

Antimicrobial Stewardship & MDROs
  1. Identify the implications of antimicrobial misuse and overuse, both within the United States and globally.
  2. Explain the correlation between antimicrobial use and the emergence of Multidrug-Resistant Organisms (MDROs).
  3. Evaluate ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing antimicrobial usage, both at local and international levels, emphasizing collaboration within the healthcare team.
  4. Assess the implementation and implications of the World Health Organization's AWARE antibiotic categorization for effective antimicrobial stewardship practices, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary teamwork in antimicrobial stewardship efforts.
Infection Prevention & MDROs
  1. Discuss impact of COVID-19 on incidence of C. auris and gram negative MDROs.
  2. Evaluate the most commonly used interventions to prevent transmission of MDROs.
  3. Discuss how healthcare teams can implement personalized MDRO prevention plan for their facility.
Resistance & Diagnostic Testing
  1. Recognize cognize commonly used tools and techniques in clinical laboratories for susceptibility testing and identification of MDROs.
  2. Employ collaborative methods in communicating test results to relevant stakeholders including the healthcare team.
  3. Identify how laboratory testing can support healthcare teams in effectively managing patients with resistant organisms.
