Infection Control Practices for Vector Mediated Gene Therapy in Healthcare Settings

June 26, 2025

Description

With advances in medical technology, live attenuated replication competent viral or bacterial vector mediated gene therapy is becoming common place. However, such therapies are associated with risk of environmental contamination and vector transmission among patients and staff. This webinar will provide an overview of the vector mediated gene therapy, its associated infection risk, infection control practices to mitigate the risk of contamination and transmission, and the role of institutional oversight committees.

Target Audience

  • Physicians
  • Advanced practice providers
  • Nurses
  • Pharmacists
  • Infection preventionists
  • Hospital epidemiologists
  • Employee/occupational health
  • Public health professionals
  • Environmental health & safety specialists
  • Clinical Research Coordinators

Learning Objectives

After participating in this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe the biotechnology of vector mediated gene therapy and its case use.
  2. Evaluate potential infection and biohazard risks associated with vector mediated therapy and the role of institutional and local oversight committees.
  3. Define institutional infection prevention and control and risk mitigation recommendations to safely provide vector mediated therapy in a clinical setting to reduce the risk of environmental contamination and transmission among susceptible patients and staff.
  4. Develop and implement team protocols for safe handling and administration of vector mediated therapies.
