This course is a compilation of short modules designed specifically for nursing home bedside staff, including certified nursing assistants, LPNs, and RNs. The modules are intended for use in daily huddles by nurse educators or infection preventionists, providing focused 5–10 minute training sessions that emphasize antibiotic stewardship while reinforcing core infection prevention and detection practices. Key topics include applying stewardship principles for common infections in nursing home residents, recognizing changes in resident condition, actively monitoring for signs of infection, and understanding the risks associated with the cultivation and transmission of multi-drug resistant organisms.

Target Audience

Certified nursing assistants and nursing staff in LTC settings.

Learning Objectives

Learners will be able to do the following after attending this activity:
 
  1. Apply core antibiotic stewardship principles to guide appropriate use of antibiotics in nursing home residents.
  2. Recognize signs and symptoms of infection and distinguish when antibiotics may or may not be necessary.
  3. Integrate antibiotic stewardship, infection detection, and infection prevention strategies into daily bedside care with confidence.
