Measuring the Social & Environmental Impact of Antimicrobial Stewardship & Infection Prevention

Description

This course explores the intersection of infection prevention, antimicrobial stewardship, and healthcare sustainability through a series of two webinars. The program focuses on strategies for reducing environmental impact while maintaining patient safety and evidence-based care. In the first webinar, participants will learn about sustainability metrics and how to evaluate the environmental impact of pharmaceutical waste and related processes, with an emphasis on promoting oral antimicrobials over IV therapy when appropriate. The second webinar focuses on the evidence-based use of gloves and strategies for reducing waste through appropriate glove use.

Target Audience

  • ID physicians (adult and pediatric)
  • Infection Preventionists
  • Antimicrobial Stewardship leads (pharmacists and physicians)
  • Hospital executives
  • Pharmacists
  • Supply chain

Learning Objectives

After participating in this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Calculate greenhouse gas emissions of IV antimicrobial and glove waste and apply time study analysis to the use of IV antimicrobials.
  2. Advocate for increased conversion from IV to oral antimicrobials and reduced reliance on glove use to reduce waste.
  3. Perform financial analysis to demonstrate cost savings associated with sustainability interventions, including IV to oral antimicrobial conversions and reduced glove waste.
  4. Collaborate with interprofessional healthcare team members to develop and implement sustainable antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention strategies that reduce environmental waste while maintaining patient safety and quality of care.

Promoting Conversion of IV to PO Medications: A Strategy for Sustainability

October 6, 2026 @ 4:00 - 5:00 pm ET

The goal of this webinar is to explore methods for calculating pharmaceutical waste and conducting time-study analyses to improve operational efficiency. The webinar will also review evidence supporting the use of oral rather than IV antimicrobials.

Speakers:
Karen Davidge, PharmD
Leila Hojat, MD, MS
Preeti Jaggi, MD

Moderator:
Lindsey Gottlieb, MD

Learning Objectives
  1. Describe the process to calculate greenhouse gas emission of pharmaceutical waste.
  2.  Apply time study analysis to increase operational efficiency with a focus on the use IV antimicrobials.
  3. Discuss the evidence for use of oral over IV antimicrobials.
  4. Build a business case to support IV to PO conversion initiatives.
  5. Collaborate with interprofessional healthcare team members to develop and implement IV-to-oral antimicrobial conversion strategies that improve operational efficiency, reduce pharmaceutical waste, and support high-quality patient care.

Using Gloves Wisely as a Sustainability Strategy in Infection Prevention
