Leveraging WGS in Healthcare Epidemiology

November 5, 2024

Description

This webinar will begin with describing the methodology used when performing whole genome sequencing and what is required for its implementation. Speakers will examine its utility when applied to routine, prospective infection prevention surveillance efforts and how this compares to reactively sequencing in the context of an epidemiological signal. Nuances pertaining to specific organisms will be incorporated. Lastly, speakers will present metrics that can be used in assessing the impact of whole genome sequencing in these efforts.

Target Audience

  • Microbiologists
  • ID Physicians
  • Infection Control (IPC)
  • Hospital Leadership
  • Pharmacists
  • Antimicrobial Stewards
  • Physician informaticists
  • Public health epidemiologists

Learning Objectives

After participating in this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe fundamentals of WGS including methodology, infrastructure and expertise required.
  2. Examine the utility of WGS in routine, prospective infection prevention surveillance efforts and its reactive use when investigating epidemiologic signals.
  3. Review the financial resources necessary to invest in WGS for small and large scale initiatives.
  4. Review specific pathogens for which WGS may have the highest yield application.
  5. Identify metrics used in assessing the impact of WGS in infection prevention and control efforts.
