Recordings & Slides
This educational program explores the intersection of infection prevention and sustainability in healthcare, focusing on strategies to reduce environmental impact while maintaining patient safety, through a series of three webinars. In the first, participants will learn foundational concepts in sustainability metrics, data reporting, and evaluating the environmental impact of healthcare products and processes, equipping them with practical tools for driving sustainable practices in their organizations. The second session focuses specifically on sustainability in the operating room, including a multidisciplinary panel discussion on reusable versus single-use medical devices and the opportunities and challenges of "Greening the OR". In the third session, participants will gain insight on evidence-based approaches to a common personal protection, gowns, and feasibility of replacing disposable gowns with reusable alternatives, showcasing real-world experiences in waste reduction and system resilience.
Fundamentals of Implementation & Evaluation of Environmental Cleaning & Disinfection in the Healthcare Facility
This session provides an in-depth review of fundamental principles for implementing and evaluating environmental cleaning and disinfection in healthcare settings. Speakers will examine key frameworks for ensuring effective cleaning protocols, discuss strategies for collaboration between infection prevention and environmental services teams, and illustrate quality assurance methodologies. Topics will include evidence-based approaches to cleaning implementation, risk assessment for environmental contamination, and best practices for evaluating cleaning efficacy. Participants will explore critical questions such as: How can healthcare facilities optimize their environmental cleaning programs? What methods ensure compliance with cleaning protocols? How can disinfection outcomes be measured and improved?
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the role of the healthcare environment as a source of infection and explain the importance of environmental disinfection in preventing healthcare-associated infections.
- Apply standardized, evidence-based methods for assessing cleaning efficacy and compliance.
- Describe the role of interdisciplinary collaboration in optimizing environmental cleaning and disinfection efforts, ensuring collaboration between infection prevention, environmental services, and clinical teams.
Approach to Evaluating New Disinfection Products
This session starts with an overview of how to evaluate a new disinfection product and how to incorporate a value analysis framework in this evaluation. The didactic portion will also describe key considerations for selecting a new disinfection product. The second half of the webinar will be a more interactive discussion or case study where the speaker will demonstrate using a standardized framework to evaluate a new disinfection product.
Learning Objectives:
- Explain how to do a product evaluation and what should be considered in a value analysis committee.
- Describe characteristics of an ideal disinfection product.
- Apply a standardized evaluation framework to a new disinfection product.
