Prevention CHKC
What is Prevention CHKC?
Prevention CHKC is designed to train frontline healthcare personnel, defined as those “responsible for direct patient care” in best practices to prevent and control HAIs and pathogens that can spread in the healthcare setting. Training educates frontline personnel to successfully execute best practices in topics that include:
- Prevention of CLABSI, CAUTI, SSI, VAP/VAE
- Prevention of C. difficile and MRSA
- Prevention strategies:
- Methods for appropriate performance and timing of hand hygiene in the healthcare setting
- Disinfection and environmental control
During the COVID-19 pandemic, some of your facility's practices may vary from those shown due to the novel nature of SARS-CoV-2, and/or resource constraints. Please follow your facility's procedures.
Prevention CHKC Update:
As of 9/29/2021, we've updated the Prevention CHKC Training Modules to ensure they are relevant and accurate based on new recommendations and science.

Target Audience
Prevention CHKC is intended for frontline healthcare personnel, defined for the purposes of this project as individuals in a healthcare facility “responsible for direct patient care.” These individuals may be physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, certified nursing assistants, medical assistants, emergency medical technicians, patient care technicians, respiratory therapy technicians, surgical technicians, anesthesia providers, students, ID fellows, critical care fellows, transportation personnel, pharmacists, physical and occupational therapists and aides, and others. Prevention CHKC was developed from the standpoint of delivery of healthcare in acute care in the United States, but may be adaptable for other locations.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Review best practices for the prevention of device-and pathogen-associated infections in hospitals, e.g. CLABSI, CAUTI, SSI, VAP/VAE, C. difficile, and MRSA, how to perform and promote hand hygiene, and how to improve frontline personnel’s understanding of disinfection and sterilization as appropriate for their role(s)
- Demonstrate ways to perform basic HAI prevention strategies, plus advanced approaches for outbreak management
- Examine performance and accountability measures within the healthcare team to implement infection prevention practices

ABIM MOC STATEMENT
Successful completion of this activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 6.75 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine's (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.
Nursing Continuing Professional Development
This nursing continuing professional development activity was approved by the Virginia Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
PHARMACISTS
The Prevention CHKC continuing education modules for pharmacists have been developed through a joint providership of ProCE, Inc. and SHEA. ProCE is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education (CPE). ACPE Universal Activity Numbers 0221-9999-20-191-H04-P through 0221-9999-20-201-H04-P and 0221-9999-20-206-H04-P through 0221-9999-20-207-H04-P have been assigned to these knowledge-based home-study CE activities (initial release date 3-20-2020). These CPE activities are approved for a total of 6.75 contact hours (0.675 CEU) in states that recognize ACPE providers. Completion of an evaluation and post-test with a score of 100% for each module is required to receive CPE credit. Proof of completion will be posted in NABP CPE Monitor profiles. No partial credit will be given for any individual module.

Physicians:
In order to receive Physician credit, participants must successfully complete both the post-tests with passing scores of 100% and the course evaluation. You will have unlimited opportunities to take the post-tests.
Nurses:
Nurses who complete this activity will be awarded a maximum of 6.75 nursing contact hours. In order to receive nursing credit, participants must successfully complete the post-tests with passing scores of 100%. Participants will be awarded continuing education commensurate with their completion. Nursing Contact Hours will be awarded for completion of this activity through March 31, 2023.

Complete Pre-CHKC in order to identify your learning path. You can take the modules it recommends in any order, as well as additional modules outside of your learning path. Upon completion of each module, you’ll move to the Post-CHKC test to evaluate how much you’ve learned. You’ll need to get 100% of the questions correct to move to the next module and earn credits/certificates.
Continuing Education Credits and Certificates:
- Once you pass the Post-CHKC of each of the modules you wish to complete, you will complete the PROGRAM EVALUATION, claim credits and select your certificate(s).
- You can only claim credits ONCE. Be sure to claim credits AFTER you have completed all desired modules.
- You will be able to print/download the certificate of completion and accreditation certificates for which you opted in.
